Abstract

Server virtualization is currently one of the most important aspects within the trends of modernization in the business world. The virtualization of IT systems is used to mitigate and, in many cases, eliminate the underutilization of servers. In light of these new trends and with the aim of staying at the forefront, MINREX is considering virtualizing the network services it offers, in order to address the current shortage of hardware resources. However, before proceeding with this virtualization, a study is necessary to gather information on the feasibility of the process. This study identified the main barriers to virtualization, as well as the most appropriate software to carry it out. The type of research conducted was an exploratory, cross-sectional study, which identified the main barriers to virtualization as the initial cost and the lack of qualified personnel. Nevertheless, the most decisive factors for carrying out this process are: savings in hardware resources, reduced energy consumption, and greater operational efficiency. The most suitable software solutions for implementation are VMWare and VirtualBox.
