Abstract

A comprehensive financial, economic, social, productivity, and environmental assessment was carried out on the use of sugarcane bagasse as an energy resource in two sugar mills in Nicaragua — CASUR and MONTELIMAR — which generate electricity for self-consumption using sugarcane bagasse. The research concluded that this activity is highly profitable from a financial perspective for both CASUR and MONTELIMAR, positioning both mills in an activity that offers significant economic benefits derived from the use of this renewable energy resource for society at large, although CASUR shows greater benefits. From the perspective of social impact, both mills were also assessed as highly profitable, demonstrating that the use of sugarcane bagasse for electricity generation makes a significant social contribution. In terms of the total factor productivity employed in electricity generation, both mills have the potential to improve their productivity growth rates.
