The study was conducted to determine the in situ variation of pataste or chayote [Sechium edule (Jacq.) Swartz] in El Castillito, Las Sabanas, Madriz. Thirty five chayotes accessions were collected, and thirty four quantitative and qualitative variables such as fruit and seed size, shape and fruit color, presence of thorns and fiber, among others were measured. Descriptive, main components and clustering analysis were applied. The fruits were from cream to dark green colour, round, oval and elongated, and with spines. The first three main components isolated 60% of the total variation. Cluster analysis (Ward and Gower method) gathered the accessions in six groups. The accessions showed a considerable variation in many features.
