Safe observation of the Venus transit of June 5, 2012

Abstract

On June 5, 2012, a major event in astronomy history was observed, as mankind witnessed a very rare interplanetary eclipse: The transit of Venus. As this event will not happen again before 2117, a huge interest was foreseen on the public. Seeing the transit implies unavoidable direct Sun observations, and considering that the intense solar radiation could damage people´s eyesight, the Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics of the National Autonomous University of Honduras included, as part of its Outreach activities Program, an awareness strategy to educate the public on safe observations of this event.
