Abstract

This paper will first explore the nature of linguistic fossilization and why many students get "stuck" within intermediate levels of language development. The incidental objective is to immerse the reader in the discourse on Second Language Acquisition. The second goal is to dwell in the murky waters of language proficiency beyond the intermediate level and to those advanced levels needed for success with academic language. Given the intended focus of advancing second language development, the final objective is to introduce an amalgamation of "new' language learning standards as a backdrop for promoting defossilization.
The article will end with this compendium and a few suggested strategies aimed at promoting advanced native-like language
development.
