This essay provides information about the current status of municipal landfills in the integrated areas of the watershed of Laguna de Apoyo, considering the recent approval (May, 2010) of the Zoning Plan of the basin of the Nature Reserve Laguna de Apoyo (RNLA). The findings are useful for municipal councils that are developing projects for the improvement of final disposal sites for solid waste.
Among the issues raised are: the current situation of municipal solid waste collection; the disposal of solid waste contrasted to the characteristics of the location of landfills; the design, operation andmaintenance of the solid waste, and administration and control issues. The essay also presents an assessment of the location, design and operation of disposal sites; and identifies and assesses current and potential environmental and social impacts that can be found on these sites. On the other hand, improvement schemes are proposed for the design and operation of the landfills to mitigate the potential impacts identified in them.
