Competitiveness of SMEs at the micro level: case of Comayagua Honduras by Palmerola Airport

Abstract

The word competitiveness is used in atmospheres made up of governments, states, companies, businessmen and universities. The objective of this study was to analyze the micro-level elements that affect the competitiveness of SMEs (Small and Medium Enterprises) in the city of Comayagua, Honduras due to the opening of the Palmerola International Airport, based on the methodology of the Competitiveness Map of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). With a quantitative, descriptive, correlational and cross-sectional approach. A total of 60 SMEs were studied, using probabilistic sampling, with the survey as the data collection instrument. The results show that the SMEs have been operating for between 11 and 31 years, with a strong correlation between the manager's profession and strategic planning; likewise, it was identified that their level of competitiveness is moderate in the dimensions of strategic planning, technology, production and operations, quality assurance, commercialization, marketing, accounting and finance, human resources, environmental management and information systems; On the other hand, there is a significant correlation between the indicator of periodically reviewing the strategic plan and the development of continuous improvement programs, between the technology and training dimension, and also between marketing and accounting, specifically in the indicators of prices and financial statements, as well as between accounting, finance and human resources.
