Proposal of a methodology for the evaluation of the competency-based curriculum at UNAN-Managua, Nicaragua

The purpose of the study was to present a methodological proposal for the competency-based curriculum evaluation system at the National Autonomous University of Nicaragua, Managua (UNAN-Managua), as a contribution to the strengthening of educational quality. This was based on the application of the mixed approach, of transversal character, with a descriptive and explanatory scope. It is also a case study carried out at the Regional University Center, Estelí (CUR-Estelí) oriented to the competency-based curriculum evaluation system. Information on the evaluation system was obtained through documentary analysis, surveys, interviews and focus groups. The main findings show that the referent of the evaluation in the University are the competencies, achievement indicators, criteria and learning evidences. The competencies implemented are generic and specific, as well as the basic, professionalizing and integrating curricular components. The participants in the study mentioned weaknesses in evaluation, which need to be addressed for the successful development of the model. This represented the starting point in the elaboration of the proposal for the implementation of the evaluation system of the curricular components at UNAN-Managua, particularly for CUR-Estelí. This, as a pilot experience from the methodological point of view as a guide for the teaching exercise. As a competency-based curriculum is just beginning, it is necessary to monitor the evaluation, since it is a key aspect of the educational process to overcome the limitations that may arise.
