Abstract

This essay examines General Augusto Sandino’s perspective and legacy on cooperativism in Nicaragua during the period 1933-1934. It is based on a review of historical documents and testimonies of Sandinista veterans to understand how the hero of Las Segovias saw cooperativism as a socioeconomic alternative based on solidarity and equity. Inspired by cooperative experiences in Mexico, Sandino promoted the creation of workers’ and peasants’ associations to promote food self-sufficiency and improve their living conditions. His vision transcended the local, aspiring to create a Central American organization and a Universal Commune. However, the project was cut short by the intervention of the United States through the National Guard and Somoza in 1934, when the general of free men and women was assassinated. Although the first cooperative experience did not prosper immediately, it left a legacy that resurfaced with the Sandinista Popular Revolution of 1979, promoting cooperativism and the social economy in Nicaragua, highlighting the importance of cooperation and community for a more just and equitable society.
