Abstract

This keynote conference was delivered on November 24, 2021, to inaugurate the First Latin American Congress on Sociohistorical Studies of Sports. The event was organized by the The National Open and Distance University of Colombia (Universidad Nacional Abierta y a Distancia de Colombia). The conference was divided into two parts: in the first part, the objective was to analyze how the first studies on sports emergence worldwide and in Latin America. It is also intended to discuss the beginnings of the social scientific study of sports in Central America. The second part aimed to study the relationship between sports, identities, and modernization in Central America within the 1873 to 1924 period.
