Abstract

Anatomy is a "basic structural science" of the highest value, as it is the foundation of all other medical disciplines, which could not subsist without it. This is further enhanced when it offers precise notions for medical and surgical practice, thus having the privilege of being useful to humanity. The term "anatomy" was coined in ancient times and comes from the Greek: "ana" (upward, above, repetition); "temnein" (cut); and is linked to the Latin term "dissection": to cut and separate.
