Diabetes mellitus screening in patients of Mario Catarino Rivas Hospital, San Pedro Sula, Honduras

Diabetes Mellitus is a public health problem, worldwide it is estimated that there are approximately 425 million people affected. In Honduras 495,011 people with Diabetes Mellitus were reported in 2015, currently it is recorded that 7% to 10% of the population suffers from it. The Mario Catarino Rivas Hospital (MCRH) is the largest healthcare center in San Pedro Sula, where 1,500 monthly care is pro- vided to patients with the disease. Objective: To determine the risk factors for diabetes in pa- tients attending the HMCR from October 2018 to January 2019. Methodology: A quantitative, descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted. Population: 6000 patients who attended outpatient consultation. Sample: 600 patients, calculated with the Open Epi statistical program. Sampling: was for convenience. FINDRISK Risk Factors Questionnaire Instrument :to identify risk factors. Results: 37.33% obtained a score between 7-11 points having a high and very high risk respectively, with a mean of 10.9 and a standard deviation of 5.1; the remaining 38.32% have no risk for type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. Conclusion: Approximately a quarter of the population that participated in the study has high and very high risk and the mean of the total study population presents slightly elevated risk.
