Ureteric duplications can be complete and incomplete, unilateral or bilateral. The unilateral form is more frequent than the bilateral one. The incomplete type is due to a bifurcation of the ureteric bud before it reaches the metanephric blastema, the ureters fusing before reaching the bladder and opening into a single orifice. In the complete one, the presence of two ureteral buds leads to the formation of two ureters and two completely separate renal pelvises. Both varieties can present with uretero-ureteral reflux that causes complications such as infection, lithiasis, and hydronephrosis.
