Abstract

Three hundred years ago Antonie van Leeuwenhoek observed for the first time in a primitive microscope some "small animalcules" that are now known as microorganisms. Microorganisms are the most primitive and numerous beings that exist on earth, they colonize all environments: soil, water and air, they participate in a vital way in all ecosystems and are in continuous interaction with plants, animals and man. Microorganisms, whatever their diversity and ability to adapt in a changing environment, have confronted humanity and as a product of this interaction, the acquisition and spread of infectious diseases has arisen throughout history.
