Background: In 2005, UNICEF, UNAIDS launched the Unite for Children, Unite with youth, Unite against AIDS, which focuses on four key areas: prevention of transmission from mother to child, pediatric treatment AIDS education programs for prevention, and support for orphans with HIV vulnerable. Objectives: The Comprehensive Care Center Dr. Mario Catarino Rivas Hospital Nacional (CAI/HNMCR) serves 365 HIV positive children, this study aims to determine the clinical and epidemiological aspects that characterizes them. Patients and Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study, obtaining a random sample of 67 HIV positive orphans cared for in the CAI/HNMCR. Using data collection for the review of medical records and interview, taking into account the clinical and epidemiological variables you selected. Results: Of the orphaned children with HIV 70% are over 13 years old and 3% have less than five years. 38.8% live in households for their care.
The 100% of orphaned children with HIV route of transmission was perinatal transmission, 18% of orphaned children with HIV are clinical and immunological category C3 and 40% of these children have merited second-line highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) sometime. Conclusions: a more urgent response as a policy of the country to ensure that the rights of these children in vulnerable conditions are respected is required.
