Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is currently considered one of the great epidemics that affects the population worldwide. It is included in the so called chronic noncommunicable diseases (CNCD). According to data from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), together with cardiovascular diseases, cancer and chronic respiratory diseases, they represent the main causes of premature death and disability in most of the countries of the Americas. represent 60-70% of all deaths in the region.  DM includes risk factors: sedentary lifestyle, obesity, low consumption of vegetables in the diet, dyslipidemias, smoking, and high levels of glycaemia.
