Abstract

According to the WHO, anemia affects over 1,600 million people in the world, that is to say almost 25% of the world population, (1) with the highest prevalence in pre-school children. Although the most common anemia is iron deficiency anemia, sickle cell anemia or "sickle cell disease" follows in importance due to the large number of complications involved in those who suffer from it.
