OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY AND STATE OF MIND OF ELDERLS IN TWO NURSING HOMES, CORTES DEPARTAMENT

Occupational therapy carries out its work in terms of health promotion, disease prevention and health rehabilitation through adult occupation strategies with daily activities that allow and stimulate their physical independence.Objective: Identify how occupa- tional therapy activities perform a positive impact on physical and mental disabilities, social margination and the mood of the elderly living in two nursing homes in the Cortés Departament. Patients and Metho- dology: Quantitative, descriptive-transver- sal study, carried out in two nursing homes at Cortés Departament during the first half of 2017. The sample consisted of 30 elderly adults institutionalized through a questionnaire. The information was obtained through the application of a questionnaire. Results: It was found that 50% of institutionalized older adults do not perform any occupational therapy, the other 50% refer to doing occupational therapy as; Crafts with paper, go to church, paint, sow plants and exercise. It was found that 18 people (60%) often feel demoralized and sad, 21 (70%) have a level of depression that ranges from mild to severe. Conclusion: The study indicated that more than 50% of the elders do not perform any type of occupational therapy and present a geriatric depression level from mild to severe, this will have a direct impact on their mood and physical health.
