Diagnosis of the current Strategic Planning System at Bluefields Indian & Caribbean University, period 2014–2018

The Bluefields Indian & Caribbean University (BICU) is a Community and Intercultural university created to serve the people of the Autonomous Regions of the Caribbean of Nicaragua; Through its institutional functions, it has achieved to positioned itself as an excellent alternative to contribute directly to the human and sustainable development of the Nicaraguan Caribbean. However, in this institution, the strategic planning processes and annual operational plans are framed in a management style currently called "Strategic Management" which consists of the technical and rational execution of a program through the institutional organic structure, through which decisions are made to achieve the expected results in a certain time based on a planning system instituted for this purpose. This article arises from the results of the doctoral thesis and aims to diagnose the current Strategic Planning System at Bluefields Indian & Caribbean University (BICU), identifying strengths, weaknesses, threats and opportunities, in the period 2014-2018. The research has a qualitative approach, the method of documentary analysis of the main successes and limitations derived from the strategic planning system was used, an interview and focus group technique were applied to obtain primary information, it is concluded that the BICU authorities in general they are unaware of the functioning of the institutional planning system.
