The study, conducted at the Carlos Marx German-Nicaraguan Hospital between 2020 and 2023, analyzed prolonged mechanical ventilation in critically ill pediatric patients. Eighty-four clinical records that met the inclusion criteria were reviewed. Pressure-controlled ventilation (PCMV) was found to have the best survival rate, with 95% at 9 days. Additionally, nutritional status and age under 3 years were identified as crucial factors in the patients' outcomes. Pathology such as sepsis, septic shock, anemia, and a history of premature birth were highly associated with the need for prolonged mechanical ventilation.
