Abstract

The aim of this research was to identify the main problems in the handling of surgical samples received in the Pathology Department of the Oscar Danilo Rosales Argüello Teaching Hospital (HEODRA), as well as to establish the level of knowledge of the handling of samples in the personnel who perform it. The study consisted of three phases: initial diagnosis of the samples and knowledge surveys of those who handle surgical samples; intervention with the personnel involved, through talks and printed educational material and, at the end, a new diagnosis of the handling of the samples and knowledge surveys after the intervention. The results showed deficiencies in the handling of samples such as: inadequate volume of fixative liquid, lack of information on the biopsy request forms and their clinical data, bottles with inadequate capacity, mouth and lid closure, as well as limitations in the knowledge of the personnel for the adequate handling of surgical samples. All the limitations found decreased considerably after intervention through talks and delivery of educational material.
