Neonatal priapism. Case report and literature review
Keywords:
Priapism, erection, neonatalAbstract
Introduction: Priapism can be described as a prolonged and persistent penile erection lasting more than 4 hours and not associated with sexual interest or stimulation. Neonatal priapism is a rare entity with few cases reported to date (19 cases up to 2,018 including the present). Current experience in neonatal priapism is mainly based on reports of similar individual cases. Therefore, evaluation, treatment and follow-up are challenging in the practice of pediatric urology. Clinical case: a male patient, a 20-day-old newborn due to coinfected diaper dermatitis, is admitted and given management. On the second day of his hospitalization, he presents priapism that he resolves 5 days later. Discussion: High low neonatal priapism is the most common at this stage. The knowledge of the priapism chart allows us to carry out an appropriate approach, systematically apply the examinations and establish a diagnosis and treatment to prevent its complications. Conclusion: An exact cause of this pathology is not known, so the management will be in most cases conservative.
