Knowledge, Practices and Attitudes in patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Background: Type 2 diabetes is one of the major problems for health systems in Latin America. The expectation of growth is based on the high prevalence of conditions that precede diabetes such as obesity and glucose intolerance. Objectives: To determine the knowledge and practices of patients with type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in El Nance village, Campamento, Olancho, October- December 2016. Methods: A descriptive observational study including all patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus Village El Nance, Camp, Olancho. A previous survey was conducted and then education was provided to each patient. Results: N = 40 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus where evaluated, more than half of them do not know what it is hypoglycaemia, half of them relate complications due to type 2 diabetes mellitus. One third of the patients do not perform physical activity weekly. Half of them do not have a glucometer. More than half of the patients would attend their medical appointments if they knew they would be better. Discussion: Type 2 diabetic patients in this study had adequate knowledge about the concepts of disease, complications, and some practices, similar to the results of Central American studies.
