Blood hypertension and gestational diabetes in obese patients and overweight, Health Center Alonso Suazo, Tegucigalpa

Background: The impact of obesity and excessive weight gain in pregnancy as well as newborns (high birth weight, prematurity, diabetes mellitus and metabolic syndrome in childhood) is clearly documented, and its association with adverse perinatal outcomes is well known Objective: to determine the frequency of hypertension and gestational diabetes in obese and overweight pregnant women undergoing diet and exercise attending the Alonso Suazo health center in Tegucigalpa. Methods: A descriptive study conducted at the Alonso Suazo health center in September 2016 to May 2017; convenience sampling by capturing all pregnant women with obesity during the course of 9 months (September 2016 to May 2017) and they were followed up for evaluation and management of overweight at the next prenatal check-up appointments. The data collected were entered on a basis in the statistical package IBM SPSS statistics 21. Results: 68 pregnant patients with BMI greater than 25 participated, the average age was 31 + - 4 years, diet and exercise were indicated to 100% of the patients and restriction of 50% prenatal pills, a satisfactory weight control was obtained in 50% of the patients; the remaining 50% did not achieve a satisfactory control of weight, 7.4% of the patients presented complications that correspond to the group that did not have a satisfactory weight control in pregnancy OR = 1.172 (95% CI = 1.020-1.348, p = 0.020). Conclusion: Satisfactory weight control in obese and overweight women through proper diet and exercise helps to reduce the main complications related to obesity and pregnancy such as gestational diabetes and high blood pressure.
