Knowledge and Application of the Informed Consent in the patients of the University Hospital/ Maternal-Child Hospital

Background: In Honduras the Informed Consent (IC) hasn’t been subject of study or publication. Objective: To establish the level of knowledge about the diagnostic, treatment and prognosis of their disease and the application of the Consent Informed in the patients admitted in the services of Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Surgery and Gynecology of the University Hospital/ Maternal-Child Hospital Tegucigalpa, during the period March-May 2015. Method: Quantitative, descriptive and cross-sectional study. The selected sample consisted of 252 patients admitted in the four basic services (63 patients per service). Using a non-probabilistic sample. The data was recollected through a survey which consisted in 4 sections: general data, knowledge of their disease, person who informed and the application of the informed consent. To validate the instrument a pilot test was performed. The results are presented in frequency and percentage of the studied variables. The IC was applied to participants over 18 years und the informed assent those over seven years, the conidentiality of the information was protected. Results: 48% (120-252) of the subjects studied had an insuficient level of knowledge about their disease. The Informed Consent was applied to 34% (86/252) of the subjects studied. The service that applied the most informed consent was Gynecology, they applied it to 62% (39/63) of the subjects studied. Conclusions: The majority of the subjects studied had an insuficient level of knowledge of their disease. The percentage of the application of the informed consent by the health-care workers is low.
