Surgical approach to thyroid nodules with follicular lesion of undetermined significance
Keywords:
Thyroid nodule, thyroid gland, thyroidectomyAbstract
Background: Thyroid nodules have observed a considerable rise in its incidence; an estimated from 20-67% in recent years. These prevail in geographical areas affected by iodine deficiency, as well as in the female gender and at older age. As they are usually asymptomatic, they have been incidentally diagnosed. In general, its degree of malignancy is low, but at the end of life it is potentiated. Source: This bibliographic research was carried out between August and September 2015, in the following databases: PubMed / Medline, SCIELO (Scientific Electronic Library Online), LILACS (“Literatura Latinoamericana del Caribe en Ciencias de la Salud”), Redalyc (“Revistas Científicas de América Latina y el Caribe, España y Portugal”) and Google Scholar. Presentation: The current paper is focused on showing the causes, diagnosis, and above all, the treatment of thyroid nodules of indeterminate follicular significance. Conclusions: Conservative treatment guarantees close monitoring; nevertheless, they have an impact on the patient’s emotional health and economy. On the other hand, the genetic studies offer high specificity and sensitivity to discern the biological behavior, although its limited accessibility prevents its use. Thyroidectomy is the defining treatment in most cases as it decreases considerably future complications.
