Multiple Sclerosis: A Review; The Challenge in Honduras

Introduction. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a demyelinating disease of the central nervous system (CNS) that affects mainly young female adults. It is characterized by a higher prevalence in countries further from the equator. The diagnosis is based on the McDonald’s Criteria, which uses Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) as its most important element. Management utilizes immunomodullator Disease Modifying Treatments. (DMT). Objective. The aim of this article is to present a thorough review of the most updated and relevant information about MS, specifically as it applies to Honduras. Methods. The article was composed through a comprehensive search of publications within the last seven years in the following databases: PubMed, LILACS and Hinari. Local data acquisition was also obtained. Development and Conclusion. Relevant information in Honduras is scarce. Epidemiological studies are required to assess the reach of this degenerative and debilitating disease and its socioeconomic impact on the Honduran population.
