Abstract

Background: The metabolic syndrome has become important in recent years, and is currently an epidemic in health, due to the increasing number of overweight and obese people, their association with diabetes and cardiovascular risk overall. Sources: the library we obtained from PubMed, NLM well as information on specialized sites in the field (WHO, IDF, ATPIII) with years of coverage 2003-2013. Development: In this review we focus on the rise of the metabolic syndrome, its criteria, and its participation in the development of diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular risk overall. Conclusion: The metabolic syndrome has increased for many years, influenced by the lifestyle we have adopted thus becoming, in an epidemic today, so we must act today in order to have health tomorrow.
