Abstract

Celiac disease is an autoimmune disease with genetic background characterized by chronic inflammation of the proximal portion of the small intestine, or jejunum, with atrophy caused by exposure to gliadin, a component of gluten, vegetable protein found mainly in wheat, barley and rye.It is associated with autoimmune diseases and neurological or psychiatric disorders. In this paper we specifically discuss the most common neurological and psychiatric disorders or entities with which it has been associated. Gluten ataxia, neuropathy associated with celiac disease syndrome and celiac disease, epilepsy and cerebral calcifications are entities in my fundamental view, given that many opportunities present in silent forms or oligosymptomatic disease and its recognition and therapeutic approach gluten-free diet allows the improvement and even cure neurological symptoms. The pathophysiological basis of these pictures probably is triggered by autoimmune mechanisms. Also analyze the association headache especially migraine , to finally address depression and autism although in these cases, the relationship, especially with autism is questioned and will merit much more study in the future.
