From the view of sociocultural anthropology, it is proposed that the use of psychoactive substances is something society itself encourages, promotes and renders invisible. It identifies drug use and abuse from the perspective of the image, group identity and feeling of belonging, among other things. It also identifies elements of consumer culture of the substances. Likewise, it states that the need to consume is sordid, and to what extent an addict will go to fill this need. It presents pertinent institutions’ responses to this issue through preventive and therapeutic programs.
