The informal economy is part of the structural reality of almost every country in the world, although the most under developed countries are the ones in which this type of economic activity is most prevalent. However, despite being a source of income for a representative segment of the economically active population, because of characteristics associated with the lack of standardization and controls, it may be ideal as a niche for criminal activity and potentially for criminal associations at the level of organized crime.
Using diverse empirical evidence, this article examines the relation between the informal economy and the progress of criminal associations - gangs and other groups - in El Salvador, with the aim of proposing 10 year Foresight scenarios from 2015 to 2025 to make a prognosis of their evolution based on income growth. It will conclude by considering the role of the informal economy in this uneasy relationship.
