This article submits a qualitative research carried out with El Salvador’s police officers in 2016, which explains the factors involved in adjusting the ways in which foot patrol is carried out in areas with high gang presence. It analyzes the influence of police education, the adverse territorial environment and institutional conditions over the interests and priorities of the patrol. The findings indicate three adjustment mechanisms for patrolling in areas with gang presence. It is an important feedback for police education in order to find the best ways to impact the teaching of patrolling.
