Abstract

There are many ways of research in which oral sources are used, some of them are called epistemological, others methodological, and other ones techniques or tools. On this paper, eleven research projects carried out over the past 25 years where compared, all of them developed with and from people: six of them were accomplished through the tool oral histories, while in the other five that tool was not used. Firstly, our epistemological position has been clarified and then oral histories have been contrasted with life stories and life history tools. As a main result, the importance of understanding these devices as not innocuous tools must be highlighted. Oral histories are only useful for community participation if this tool is suitable for the context and moment of the community in which it is used. The article ends up with several reflections on popular cultures and community participation.
