Two paths of independence in 1821

Abstract

1821 was a year pregnant with events that led, in two well different, to the independence of much of Latin America. The process
emancipator was favored by what happened on January 1 of the previous year, when in Cabezas de San Juan (Cádiz), Spain, Lieutenant Colonel Rafael de Riego revolted with his troops and proclaimed the restoration of the constitution liberal of 1812. The military uprising had as protagonist the royalist forces that they should embark to Spanish America, to try to crush the reborn separatist movement in South America led by generals José de San Martin and Simon Bolivar.
