Abstract

In this article the author presents an ecclesial view of martyrdom, first stating its historical relevance at present and the traits the phenomenon has acquired in the 20th century. That is, there is no correspondence with the classic definition, which highlights a negative vision such as hatred of faith (odium fidei). Second, the writer presents Archbishop O. A. Romero as an illustrative example of ecclesial praxis. An analysis of his ministry demonstrates an ecclesiality that is historically responsible and open to transcend under the sing of hope and mercy. The conclusion presents martyrdom under the sign of love, justice, peace, and human rights. It is stated that there exists a real possibility to live our ecclesiality in a responsible way.
