This article describes, in general terms, a model of transition that aims to explain historical changes in the relations between material phenomena (economy, society, institutions) and subjective ones (culture, religion, spiritualism). Second, the article discusses three definitions of "development" or models of evolution or change, presenting them as the base for empirical studies on the relation between religion and social change. Finally, the author discusses to what extent this model may be useful to understand the relations among the agents of cooperation with "development.
