Citizen science applied to the stranding of marine species in the Pacific of Nicaragua

Stranding of marine species occurs along the Pacific and Caribbean coastal zone of Central America. In the Pacific of Nicaragua, strandings are reported throughout the year, increasing in periods of migration of marine species. The necessary information about the species, the periods and their spatial distribution is not available. An excellent alternative to record this information is through citizen science, with the help of new information and communication technologies. The objective of this research is to analyze the behavior of strandings of marine species through citizen science. An Android application hosted on the Google playstore was developed. This allows us to collect information in the field, which is connected to the ESRI platform. Any citizen in the coastal areas will be able to report the strandings and at the same time view the records through a web application that will have the location, photographs, species and the dates on which the organisms were found. 8 stranding reports have been obtained, of which 7 have been sea turtles (Lepidochelys olivácea and Chelonia mydas agassizii) and 1 report of Dolphin. Through the photographs, a massive stranding was identified in the area of San Juan del Sur, where more than 10 dead turtles were reported. Most of the reports were of dead organisms and mostly in a state of decomposition, with the exception of the Dolphin that was observed alive and returned to the sea by community members. Citizen participation has been active in data collection through the application, this has allowed us to have a database that is constantly updated based on the organisms that appear on the beaches.
