The primary function of the kidneys is to filter metabolic waste products and excess sodium and water from the blood, facilitate their elimination from the body, regulate blood pressure, and support red blood cell production. However, this function is lost in cases of chronic kidney disease (CKD). A lack of knowledge about this disease leads many people to engage in poor health practices, whether they suffer from the condition or not. The objective of this study was to identify the knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to CKD among the residents of the ISLA-Chichigalpa community. This was a descriptive, cross-sectional study conducted through a survey of a sample of 198 individuals. The results reveal a somewhat distorted understanding of the disease, particularly regarding its treatment, which contributes to unfavorable attitudes toward certain types of treatment and, consequently, to unhealthy behaviors, especially in terms of treatment. Nevertheless, over 60% of respondents reported engaging in preventive practices.
