Abstract

Due to the irrational use of pesticides by farmers for pest control, a descriptive study on "Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices regarding the use and management of pesticides" was conducted with small-scale producers in municipalities of the Chinandega Department. A survey was conducted with 190 farmers, and data collection was carried out using a questionnaire. The majority of the respondents were over 45 years old, had primary education, worked independently, had more than 20 years of experience, and reported receiving very little training. The most commonly known pesticides were Gramoxone, 2,4-D, and Lorsban. Seventy-eight percent were aware of the symptoms of poisoning, and 66% learned about the hazards through label instructions; however, 91% were unaware of the meaning of the pictograms. The lack of money was the main reason for not using protective equipment, although they acknowledged the risks of poisoning. The clothing they wear when applying pesticides includes long-sleeved shirts, long pants, hats, and rubber boots. The study highlights the need to expand training coverage for farmers and include content promoting alternatives to pesticide use.
