Abstract

The present study deals with the traditions that shape the cultural identity of the Gariphuna/ Garinagu currently settled in Nicaraguan territory, which purpose is to support the revitalization of their language and culture. This research intends to confirm the existence of active bearers, in this community, that contribute to the compilation of oral knowledge, which include topics such as diet, daily life, children’s games, social organization, kinship, economy, education, festivals and rituals, musical instruments, artistic demonstrations, traditional medicine, migration and housing.

María Dolores Álvarez Arzate, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Nicaragua - UNAN - Managua

María Dolores Álvarez Arzate. 1959. Born in Toluca, Mexico. Nicaraguan. Master in Anthropology - Ethnologist (1999). Professor and founding member, 1993, of the Department of Anthropology of the Faculty of Humanities and Legal Sciences of the UNAN-Managua. Has taught graduate courses at the University of Zürich, Universidad Mayor de San Andrés (Bolivia), UNAN - Managua, URACCAN, UNI and UCA. He teaches undergraduate courses at UNAN - Managua and UPOLI.

Bayardo Gámez Montenegro, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Nicaragua - UNAN - Managua

Bayardo Gámez Montenegro, 1951. Originally from Esteli. Plastic Artist and Archaeologist, UNAN-Managua (2000). He started in the field of anthropological research with Dr. Alejandro Dávila Bolaños in the 1960s. He has edited the Quinto Sol magazine since 1996. He has published two books: Puertas Giratorias, compendium of drawings and paintings, Editorial UCA, 1979, and Antología de poesía y prosa de Estelí, Editorial CNMPT-Estelí, 1991.
