CHARACTERISTICS OF ENTREPRENEURS WITH A UNIVERSITY EDUCATION THAT FAVOR THE IDENTIFICATION OF BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES

The aim of this research is to understand how entrepreneurs’ characteristics and background influence their business opportunity recognition skills, measured by the structural alignment construct. We explore their opportunity prototype, cognitive style and prior professional knowledge. 60 Salvadoran entrepreneurs with higher education were surveyed, and five of them were interviewed. Results show that a deep personal connection with the business opportunity and their prior professional background are essential to their opportunity prototype and the business they start. Moreover, a trained intuition is a helpful tool for decision making.
