Family counseling as a systemic, holistic and multidimensional transformation process stands in the midst of a society immersed in conflict, uncertainty and complexity, as a strategic alternative to intervene and prevent problems that hinder comprehensive human development and the well-being of the family. Therefore, the need to advise the family in the process of discovering and assuming their position as demands to face with safety and autonomy the emerging difficulties of everyday life is assumed.
This suggests integrating communication and symmetric dialogue, the definition of rules of behavior; sense of co-responsibility, commitment and discipline to face the challenges imposed by healthy, respectful and balanced coexistence. In response to these requirements, this article responds to a documentary review that proposes a comprehensive definition of family counseling, delimiting its purposes and possible strategies to generate help and support relationships that enhance quality of life and affective social and emotional development of the individual.
It is concluded that the construction of satisfactory family relationships requires prevention and strategic intervention, processes provided by the orientation they seek: to build solid social, affective and emotional bonds, which enable personal autonomy, the development of relationships based on respect and recognition; as well as the management of responsibility to manage the challenges that arise from daily coexistence.
