This study aims to identify technopathies (physical, mental, and social health issues resulting from improper internet and electronic device usage) prevalent among higher education students in El Salvador. The mixed-methods research design involved surveys administered to students from various faculties at the Santa Ana campus, along with interviews with psychology and medical professionals from the teaching staff at the Catholic University of El Salvador (UNICAES).
Results revealed physical health issues such as insomnia, neck and back pain, and visual problems due to excessive internet and electronic device usage. Identified mental health problems included phantom vibration syndrome, Google effect, anxiety, stress, irritability, emotional instability, and depression. Social alterations included social isolation and misrepresentation of the actual time spent connected or playing video games.
