Religious practice and political action are two very similar and deeply interconnected activities of the human spirit. Their link goes beyond mere functional, practical or surface coincidences: they spring from a common root, from the human need for the absolute and the precariousness of existence, and for that reason they are necessarily related and similar, in such a way that the modern division of them as two opposing fields of the spirit, as separable as water and oil, is alien to any pre-modern or traditional society.
