This paper addresses the issue of the institutional transformations that redefined the regime governing land access and use in the country beginning in the 1880s. The importance of revisiting this period lies in understanding the formative factors of the Salvadoran state and capitalism. The central thesis of this article is that, prior to the implementation of these changes, significant social differences already existed, and these must be carefully examined to understand how they shaped the political and social developments that followed the reforms.
