Ignacio Ellacuría and the need for self-reflection in critical theory

This article aims to clarify the central role played in Ignacio Ellacuría’s theoretical work by the thesis that the theorist must choose the “place-that-gives-truth.” It will analyze the theoretical, moral, and political significance of this thesis and its implications for the status of Ellacuría’s work. Furthermore, this approach will be placed in dialogue with reflections from hermeneutics and critical theory regarding the need for theoretical and philosophical work to engage in self-reflection on its starting point. This dialogue with these contemporary traditions of thought will allow us to situate Ellacuría’s intellectual work within the theoretical debates of the twentieth century.
