Abstract

In this article, we attempt a qualitative macro-analysis. It is also a socio-theological analysis. We argue that it is necessary to carefully consider the problem of youth violence in the Northern Triangle of Central America—not as a war, but as a confrontation that is, in part, a desperate reaction to the appalling structural living conditions in marginalized neighborhoods and rural villages. We propose the thesis that the savage capitalism characteristic of these countries generates violence and that its fundamental core lies in the racist contempt for the poor. We propose that only a long-term plan to progressively humanize these structural living conditions will ultimately lead to the pacification of youth groups in this region. We acknowledge that this long-term plan must be complemented by a short-term plan to contain youth violence while respecting the human rights of both free and incarcerated gang members, thereby gradually restoring security to these countries. We analyze the importance of this region to the United States.
