Ideology, as a concept and as a tool in political debate, is used in this country by various actors, particularly in the context of partisan and group interests. Its use, however, is not always transparent, and in many cases it is superficial or manipulative in nature. In light of this situation, this paper aims to contribute to the discussion on the concept of ideology by taking the writings of Antonio Gramsci as a theoretical reference and attempting to follow the author’s analytical development to unravel its meaning. It is argued that Gramsci’s approach to ideology provides social theory with an immensely useful theoretical tool for its study. Consequently, the purpose of this contribution is to clarify the uses of the term and highlight its importance in national political life.
