Collective memory: approach to a state of the question in the sociocognitivism and socio-constructionism

This research and theoretical review article proposes a framework for understanding collective memory and the main lines of research that have been developed in social psychology on the subject, focusing more on basic rather than applied perspectives. In other words, it examines how processes of collective memory are shaped, developed, and constructed. Various databases were reviewed: Scopus, S&T, Taylor & Francis, Dialnet, Redalyc, Sage, among others, and material was selected that accounted for how these memories are produced in subjective processes of a social nature. First, lines of research from cognitive social psychology or sociocognitivism were gathered, which define memory as a mental process influenced by social factors. Second, the lines of thought developed in socioconstructionism and discursive social psychology, which situate memory as a social action and discursive process, concluding with the Latin American critical perspective that allows us to view collective memory—in both its cognitive and discursive forms—as a process that enables the unmasking of official history and hegemonic memories that legitimize processes of domination, exclusion, and violence.
