Abstract

This article examines the functioning of a territory from the perspective of general systems theory; that is, it seeks to understand how a complex social system operates within a given territory, what relationships exist between the system and its environment, and what types of structures the territorial system supports. Subsequently, the definition of complex systems is introduced; these systems are interdependent and difficult to separate because the interactions among their components are significant, as they determine the future of the system’s structures and elements. Finally, the territory is understood as a space where the dynamics of social relations unfold. Our territorial system is defined by the various subsystems that comprise it, rather than by political-administrative boundaries.
